that's not true. actually you can with most dvd-players, but you might screw up and make your dvd-player not play at all. go to http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/region.html for more info

Go to this site:
http://www.firmware.fr.st/

It will show you the firmware updates for your drive and whether there is a patched firmware to allow your drive to be region free. If you flash it improperly, which is unlikely to happen, you can probably reflash it. It's not all-or-nothing like BIOS flashing.
