does the system have an add-on sound card, or built-in sound on the motherboard? If not, you'll need to buy one and install the drivers that come included with it. If you already have a sound card installed, check to make sure you have the proper drivers installed. Normally, you'll have a speaker icon down near the clock if the sound card/drivers have been installed properly.
