To do that you need a 56k analogue dial-up Modem. A broadband modem wont do it.

You don't need to connect an actual phone to the computer in order to send a fax, but you do need to connect a POTS line (phone line) to a modem that's connected (internal or external) to the computer.

Do you have a modem in your computer?

Hi Broker,

please advise where you are based, City/State?

you really need supply comprehensive details asto what you wish to do, and how, in order for people here to make suggestions.

For example do you have broadband and/or dial up.

Here in the UK, just sending the odd fax can be done using a service for such without any special equipment, see:-

If you want to receive the odd fax, again a service should be available. However, if you want to receive many faxes and/or directly your equipment may need be ON permanently.

If you have a dial up line and modem, some modems provide different communication protocols .e.g. fax. If you have one, you do have to have a phone, instead can control the modem with the fax program (e.g. Winfax) on your computer. It is likely the modem has a socket for a phone.

Good Luck - Keep us posted
