Subject: How to format a brand new external hdd?
Comment:

Hi,
Does someone know how to format them?
Cause my problem is, that I don't know how to do it. I've got a completly new one and now it doesn't appear in Windows with a letter. So I have to format first, right?
-Fat32 doesn't work, cause I can only choose "c:"
-And partition magic doesn't recognise the external hdd as a "disk"
- but I've already installed the drivers
And I've got Win98, P2, 64MB
The external hdd should be completly compatible.
COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME?

Thank you, Sarah.

Sarah,
If the drive is completely new, then do you have the paperwork that should have come with it?
Are you certain you have taken the time to carefully read the instructions?

Read the owners manual some of them come pre-formatted. Next how does it connect. USB or Firewire or USB 2.0. Does it show up in the device manager?

Hi,
thanks for your replies.
Some information:
It is Usb 2.0, but I have 1.1 slots (is compaztible)
2. I read the introduction which came with it, but it was the one for a cd burner, cause you can use the case for both.
3. You can see the icon with a cross in the taskbar.
4.(It has 40gb)
5. model nr: Difficult, the case is an usb 2.0 storage system, company name: quick tech solutions.
At the back, there is a number: 153722
Couldn't figure out more yet.

ps I bought it from German ebay. So I could give you a link where you can see the case. But it's not the original auction.

I was/am in contact with the seller and he said that it wasn't pre-formatted.
He told me something about Windows-help-drives...

Thanks

I have a Taiwan Version of an external USB
drive bay.

On mine with the hard drive installed and
drive powered up. When you plug the USB in
it should detect a new USB device and if it
is the first time ask for a driver disk.
(Mine came with a CD for various USB2
adapters.)

It should install drivers and the added drive
shoud appear in My Computer if it was
previously formatted. I don't remember what
it says when you have an unformatted drive,
but it does allow you to access the drive and
format it. I did that the first time I got
it with a 80G HD and it took a long time.

You say you already installed the software.

So try this, goto MS-DOS in Windows
run FDISK and check if there is a
selecton 5 - change current hard drive.

Select it and your hard drive should be
there.

Select it and then you can partition it.
I think you will have to shut down and
reboot and then goto DOS again and then
run FORMAT what ever the new drive letter(s)
are. Make sure that you do not format an
existing partition.

Good Lnck
