Comment:
hi, i'm using ASUS mobo CUSL2-C for pentium3. during bootup (winxp pro sp2), it says keyboard error or no keyboard present.
after much investigation (i even bought a new usb keyboard) i'm certain that it's NOT keyboard problem, but rather with the PS2 port on the motherboard. problem is, my BIOS is set to Halt On All Errors, but my error now is keyboard! thus i not able to enter BIOS to change the setting.
i've tried USB keuyboard but doesn't help because USB Legacy Support is turned off in the BIOS..
is there a way to get into BIOS without keyboard? (having to hit Del key, won't work since keyboard is not fucntional).
i've thumbed thru the ASUS manual and there's no resetting or a way for this. i see only resetting password..
anyone has suggestion how i could circmvent this problem, much appreciated!! right now my pc is dead.. can't boot past the "keyboard error.." message..
Why are you certain its not a keyboard problem. USB isn't native to DOS. A USB keyboard only works during the POST, pre-windows period if the BIOS supports using USB in this environment. There may be a setting in you BIOS to enable legusy USB support. You will need a PS2 keyboard to get into the BIOS. If your USB keyboards came with PS2 adapters, try using them. Use the one that came with the keyboard. They aren't always interchangable.
on my computer when i had problems with the display not coming on sometimes, I would swicth the computer off and then back on. It seemed that if i switched off and back on at a certain point like when it was halfway into windows perhaps, this confused it enough to automatically go into the BIOS without my intervention when it cam back on. (I assume the computer was thinking that it should take me there to check what was wrong as it thought the boot failure was a BIOS setting problem and not just me pressing the buttons on front of computer). So you could experiment with that to see if it goes into the BIOS, BUT I think in my BIOS you cant navigate around it or change things without the use of the keyboard so it might not actually help even if you get into the BIOS.
yes, i've tried using the new USB keyboard with the PS2 adapter supplied. same problem. the new kboard 3leds (num lock, caps lock, scroll lock) blink once or twice then went dead.. and same error message would appear. it's the same symptoms with the old keyboard.
yup this ASUS suuport legacy USB support but problem is.. the setting is set to Disabled. so i'm back to square one, ie needs to get into BIOS to change that.
but cliffpage hit home a point.. even if i manage to get into BIOS, i cant navigate around to change settings.. my only hope now, it seems.. is to hope that the keyboard came to life again, and i wld grab this opportunity to quickly go into BIOS and change Halt On setting so nex time if keyboard eerror again, it wld at least still continue to boot into winxp. once there i wld hav no issue using USB keyboard.
Keyboard is controlled by bios chip i do believe & thats maybe whats faulty or the socket has become worn where you plug the keyboard in. I think a new board as i have had same problem in the past and never resolved.
u're right, it's definitely th mobo. i've even tried with a new just bought ps2 keyboard. same problem.
i've looked thru the ASUS mobo manual, the rest back to default will still set to Halt On All Errors.. i'm trying to get it changed to Halt On No Errors so at least it will continue to boot into windows. once in windows i can use usb keyboard.
