If your notebook was made in the last couple of years, it will probably have a built in ethernet jack. If it does, the best way to go would be to get an ethernet card for your desktop pc and use an ethernet crossover cable to network the computers between themselves. Once that's setup you can transfer files between the computers from within Windows Explorer, and you don't have to fumble around with parallel transfer cables and the special file transfer programs that they require.

While I agree 100% with Bill that using NIC's is the best way to go for networking two PC's (in your case a Laptop to PC). You also have the option of using the Serial ports using DCC (Direct-Cable Connection) or even the USB ports, in case you do not have a ethernet port on your Laptop. But if you have the ability to use the Ethernet solution like Bill suggested I would definitely go that route.

I have a cable, which both ends have male USB parts to it. I tried plugging one into a laptop, and 1 into another. nothing happened. Even after trying to set it up, and going through system networking. I did see an option for Parallel, but no USB to USB.

Thats because there is now way (Currently) to connect 2 computers using USB 1.x (I heard that you can using 2.0, just like IE1333(I think that's what its called))
