Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I seemingly have a BIOS-related problem, and was told, among other things, to clear my CMOS. How can I do that? My MB is Asus A7V8X.

Hold down del key during boot and enter bios. Select "load setup defaults" Save and exit
The hard way: Unplug power cord Remove battery Remove jumper from pin 2+3 (clrtc) to 1+2 Wait 4 seconds Move jumper back to pin 2+3 Reinstall battery Plug in power cord and turn on pc Hold down del key and reenter nessary data

How do you clear CMOS if you cannot even get into it which is the usual reason for wanting to clear it in the first place?
Removing battery and switching jumpers is never going to work. Switching jumpers relies on the power from the bttery to do its job.
Either switch jumpers or remove battery, but not both. How is switching a jumper going to do anything if the motherboard is totaly devoid of any power either from a battery or mains.
If you need to clear the CMOS by removing the battery, four seconds is not going to be enough. Twenty minutes would be more in order as it takes time for the information the CMOS memory to decay. Power from the battery resets it in seconds.

In all my twenty years+ of using computers that is the first time that it has been necessary to remove a battery in order to clear the CMOS. Seems that ASUS has decided to do things differently than every other manufacture on the planet.

Dont worry, be happy rturro. Your welcome back again.
Meantime enjoy ASUS's built in update program. Just download latest bios version to a floppydisk and press Alt+F2 then booting computer. No need for a bootdisk and flashprogram. ASUS tells that the bios is crashfree, but I don't got the need to use it so far :-)
