How to change Hard drive in my Dell desktop

Specs: Windows XP, DELL 2GIG RAH
I have ordered a 500 gig EIDE hard drive for my Dell Optiplex gx260 desktop. Currently my 2 gig hd has all my programs on it.. What is the procedure to change the hard drive or transfer the data from one hd to the next

First of all, are you sure about the current hard drive capacity. Specs I found indicate that computer shippped with a 40GB drive. The BIOS in your computer is not 48 bit LBA compliant. The chipset is an 845 series which does not support drives larger than 137GB.

Your other option would be to install an add in PCI based controller card, which will allow you to use the drive.

Once you solve the 48 bit LBA compatibility issue you can clone the old drive to the new using a utility that most hard drive manufacturers have available for free.
