I ran a Windows install disc again just to make sure all the files are there. Anyway, it won't start because I'm missing so DLL file. Every time on startup it goes to the install option, not my current OS. How do I cancel it(the setup)? I've look in all options on the startup when pressing F8, it's not there.

Make sure all the files are where? Apparently you've never heard of "System File Checker"?

Can you get into safe mode? I've never encountered the problem you have but I'm not sure if there is a way to back out of it. Hopefully someone will have a more definite answer for you...

It doesn't matter anymore, I just need a way for it to stop starting up with the windows install thing.

Like I said, I'm not sure if there is a way to back out of it. You *may* have to continue with the installation, then reinstall all the Windows updates, etc.

Wait for a more definitive answer...

You might going into the recovery console (http://personal.ryantadams.com/2007/12/13/how-to-enter-the-windows-xp-recovery-console/) and then running the "fixmbr" and "fixboot" commands. Additionally, depending on how far along the install was, your "Windows" folder may have been renamed. Still in recovery console, navigate to the C: drive and type "dir". This will list all the files and folders. If you see something like "Windows.old" type "ren c:\Windows.old Windows"

If you cancelled installation of XP that was in process, the only thing you can do is format the disk and start all over again. Don't ever cancel an installation again.

The install setup shows up in msconfig, can I get rid of it there?

I never canceled it, a dll file was missing. In MSCONFIG I set XP Pro as default and I'll see if it bypassed it.

How are you able to get into msconfig if the system is trying to finish an incomplete install? You can also edit your posts; you don't have to multipost if nobody has responded to your most recent message.

It wasn't exactly an install, It was about to "re-install" but I was missing some DLL and it stopped. Now it just gives me an option to go into XP Pro, or XP Pro Install. I want it to just go straight to the install. Nothing, as far as I know, is screwed up in my file system.

So was your Windows install working before the attempt to fix the missing dll?

Start over again. Boot to the CD, repartition, format and reinstall.

I would not want to lose any files. For now, I can live with it. I'm not going to reformat. I think you're all thinking I can't boot or something. I can use this PC fine, I just don't want the boot options!

Go into boot.ini and delete the line pertaining to the Windows upgrade, or, go into system preferences, set Windows XP as the default and set the timeout to zero. Then you'll never see that prompt again.

It sounds like you started to create a dual boot setup. Where did it begin to install...on a different partition or do you now have a 2nd Windows folder on the C: partition?

Same partition. I deleted some files that were temps for the install, nothing did it. Hmm.
The install never got passed anything, really.
