I have an ASUS P4P800-VM mobo and I'm using the onboard audio. If I go out and buy a cheap sound card (under $30), how much will the sound quality differ? Dramatically? Slightly noticible? None?

The integrated system is SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio. I also have 2 speakers on my desk and a subwoofer on the ground.

Thanks.

If you want to play any kind of music you will find that any add-on sound card will be an improvement on the on-board one.

The on-board sound cards are usually only good for bleeps, whistles and other miscellaneous sounds a computer emits from time to time.

newer motherboards with onboard sound are very good. Some are 5.1 ,6.1 or even 7.1. They sound good. In the old days, a cheap sound card was much better than onboard. If you like how it sounds now, save your money.

Hi,
I agree with sonnysandiego!!
I have an Intel 845GBBV mobo with onboard sound. It sound perfectly fine to me. I have played games like Medal Of Honour, Return to castle Wolfstein, No one lives forever with no problems at all and with great sound quality. In my opinion a cheap soundcard wont make any significant difference. If u want to buy a sondcard i'd suggest u save up and buy a really cool soundcard later.

Only reason I bought a $15 sound card was the gift of a set of 4.1 speakers. It's certainly no better than the onboard...just has more places to plug speakers in.

if you want 4.1 sound, then use the card.
We don't listen to it, you do.
