yeah not $400. i probably wouldn't spend more than $250 on a used system, because once you start hitting about $500, you could buy a NEW system with WAY more upgrade potential.

the one you're looking at only has a single gig of RAM, but it's DDR1 (outdated hardware). you list the CPU as 3ghz, so i'm guessing this is probably a single-core Pentium 4 (also outdated hardware). A current Core 2 Duo would have comparable performance, multitask better, suck less power, and create less heat.

no mention of a graphics card either.

Free antivirus solutions are at least as good as the ones you'd buy from Norton/McAfee.

M$ Office is expensive, but OpenOffice ( is free and compatible with Microsoft Office.

in general, i'd almost always recommend against spending cash to buy a used PC from another person. The hardware technology just evolves too quickly, and the hardware itself degrades too quickly.

Thanks, and not only is it outdated its obselete. They don't make that model anymore. When I tried to explain it to her I think she got offended. She said also because she's including the printer which still doesn't bring the price to 400!

I think people relate the value of a used computer based on their experiences with other durable items.

The fallacy in their reasoning is that when comparing a used car or refrigerator the two products are much more similar in nature than a used computer and a typical new model. It is like comparing a used chevy to a new cadillac.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I understand that, but seeing as though I'm the one she calls when she downloads viruses and other malicious things to her computer and needs it fixed. Of all people I KNOW what that computer has been up to and what it actually worth! lol But thanks again for your input.
