Comment: Hi and good day. I just wanna ask the best way to keep my PC working longer, do I have to live it open all the time or is there a limitation of how long will it have to stay open? I mean, will it overheat of I make it to stay open for a long period of time? thanks.

Reply: (edit)It shouldn't overheat unless some piece of hardware fails. If you have confidence in your components, leave it on as long as you want.

Reply: (edit)I agree with Amourek. In a properly configured machine, nothing should overheat by virtue of being on "too long." Whether it's better to leave your machine on or turn it off is a matter of debate. Leaving it on 24/7 probably puts less stress on your drives, as the spin up/spin down process is where a lot of the wear and tear on a drive originates. On the flip side, most IDE drives are not spec'd for 24/7 usage. Will it make a difference in the overall life expectancy of your machine if you leave it on? Probably not. Dare I say doubtful... Personally, I run my workstations and server 24/7, but I use SCSI drives designed for 24/7 operation.

Reply: (edit)Yeah wawadave is right. If you plan on letting your system run for prolonged periods of time then don't us win 98. An NT based operating system(Win2k or XP) is more suitable for this. Or linux will also do. But the win9x series slows down and system stablity drops after a while.

Reply: (edit) Like the frist repy to your ? this is a matter of opinion ! I use my PC for about 3-4 hours per day and then I shut it down .I find that when you are running Windows Me , you need to reboot anyway after awhile because the user resources seem to get lower and lower the longer the system is on. I also feel leaving it on when its not being used , is adding unneeded up time to all the fans etc constantly running will surely wear out faster then they would by me powering down the PC ! IMHO ,Nick

Reply: (edit)Using Disk Cleanup You can run Disk Cleanup to help you free up space on your hard drive. Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then lists temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can also start Disk Cleanup by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup. for windows 98se if you leave running for long periods of time. I shut mine down every nite and have had the same computer and components for 4 years. If you chose to leave it on keep tower in a well ventelated area! Assuming you have a tower. Also periodicaly " 6mos. " or more often shut it down get a can of compressed air and clean the inside including fans and heatsinks. Dust collects and accumulates more on computers running month's at a time and generates excess heat.

Reply: (edit)Doh! I didn't notice you were running Win98. Leaving the system on shouldn't hurt the system, but an occasional restart would probably help too.
