Hi
My store is right next to my house...I want to run a network cable from store to the house. It would be about 125 feet. I wondered if there is a max length for network cables, and also if it would work all right out in the elements (freezing cold in winter, hot in summer etc)?

Thanks for any info!

ps..
My store has metal siding and I was told a wireless router wouldn't give me very good signal at the house because of the metal siding.

Cat5 Ethernet cable has a maximum length of 100 meters/328 feet between nodes so distance should not be a problem.

I would put the cable through conduit which will protect it a little from the elements.

Metal sided buildings are not conducive to good wireless networking. I recently set up a wireless network in a building with metal roof and walls. Perfect signal anywhere inside the building. Absolutely nothing outside the front door. Pretty good for security though.

I know they do run data cables in cities like that. You might want to sort of question the building department about that. If you install that poorly you could cause a condition that would allow you to be sued. To protect yourself I suggest you get a proper company to install that. I'd bet the $300 would be well spend.

Most people use a vpn from their homes isp to the company.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

VPN over 125 feet! Thats a bit of overkill isn't it Jefro.

We are talking about Ethernet cable between adjacent properties. It's not mains cable and as long as he doesn't put it were someone can trip over it or strangle themselves with it, I dont see a problem.

Hi
the legal thing is an issue for trailing wires between buildings & probably voiding building insurance also,
have you considered a weatherproof box for wifi?
