I don't understand your question. Maybe this analogy will help you. You need to be carried to a hospital in a hurry - which is faster - Motorized ambulance or donkey-drawn wagon?

A fast LAN is 10-100 and above, if you are going to set up a network with other computers that is known as a LAN (Local Area Network) the faster the card the faster data transfers.
Fast LAN cards are also important if you are going to subscribe to high speed internet again here you want to get the most value for your money, today modems talk to the LAN adapter at speeds up to 100MBs so adding a 100/1000Mbits NIC will be wise, although 10/100Mbits adapters will function just as well.
To say how important one is, I would say very, it opens the doors of possibility for setting up your box in LAN and Internet scenario's.

I don't have any experience with Gigabyte network controllers that some MBoard cone equipped with. However, I do believe regular CAT5 cabling will not allow you to run at those speeds and the card will downgarde to 100Mbps or less. For practical purposes the 10/100Mb standard integrated network chip on virtually every MBoard today will do the job in most cases.

i use comcast high speed internet and have never seen more than 1400kb/s download speed. they only advertise 8mb/s. verison fios only advertises 15mb/s. so why get 100 or 1000?

Not necessarily. It depends on how fast one computer can deliver the data and how fast the other can receive and process it and how many other people are using the network.
>> today modems talk to the LAN adaptor at speeds up to 100MBs <<That may be so but the data is only coming in at 2,4,8 Mbs so a standard 10/100 Mbs Ethernet card is more than adequate. We are talking bits per second here, not Bytes.
You can't have data going out of the modem faster than it is coming in.
Gbyte LANs are only of any use on large networks with many people trying to use the LAN at the same time. It will make not one jot of difference to your Internet speed and very little difference on a home network with just two or three computers and none at all on a standalone computer.

It really won't be importent to have it attached to the motherboard, but why not have it? If you have more then one computer, but only one movie storage folder you'll probably be happy to have a fast LAN connection, but it's not important that it's on the motherboard. If you're planning to use a lot of the pci ports, it'll be a good idea though. :)

10/100Mb is fast enough for video streaming. ATI has had software to do that for years. It's your cash if you want to spend it but integrated is plenty good enough.

to be honest if its for iternet access then 10mb is fine. if you want to transfer files across computers then 100mb or a gig line would be nice but then again how many times do you transfer large files so letting it do it over an hour is aceptible. if you running a file server then you want at least a gig line or two.
you cant get a 10mb on its own any more unless its a old card. there usually 10/100 or 100/gig or all three.
as for importance depends on the job its for and future proffing. i have came across hardwear that refuses to connect to a 10mb port cos its too slow
all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content.
