Better to replace the hard drive. And add more RAM while you're at it...256MB isn't enough these days.

Yup, replace the drive.
Bad sectors are not repaired. They are relocated to a special spare area on the disk. When you run out of room in that spare area, it's time to replace the drive.

I agree with all of the above as once you start getting bad sectors there is no end to it.

They just keep growing like a Cancer.

And if you apply Murphys Law......the drive will lose your most important information at the worst time.

There is no known software that can fix a mechanical problem.

If there was we would have software to fix
toasters and flat tires....replace broken windows and even....just maybe.. download a new hard drive or a Pizza and a six pack.

A new 40 gig can be had for under $20.00.. on Ebay. New in box.

Most Office supply places have hds on sale
given the recent economy....it's quicker than Ebay.

agree 100% with everything stated. but there have been times when, a windows boot floppy would not be able to finish a format and then, I could finish it using gparted.

you have nothing to lose, but you data. So be prepared for that.
