How do you use them. I downloaded Knoppix and a HDD Nuke Program (.iso) and I burned the files to a cdr(i tried cdrw too) and popped em in my old computer and on boot up nothing happened(just booted win98 regular...). I also tried opening up the file in my computer but win98 doesnt know what to do with an .iso file (winxp on this computer didnt either actually...). How do I use them. I desperately need to format the hdd and install a new os(preferably a linux, i.e. my post in the linux forum). Please if you suggest sometihng to do with dos or msdos be very specific because i am quite the n00b with command prompts...
Thanks...

First you need to make sure the disk has something on it. Pop it into your cd rom and see if there are files on it. If it burned successfully you need to reboot and check your bios to make sure the boot to cd rom is first in the boot order.

You need to open the file with ISO extension with the burning program of your choice. You can use your usual settings for burning speed etc.The ISO image is an exact replica of the CD from which it was created. If the CD is not protected ,it is the best way to duplicate it for personal use and safe keeping of the original copy on CD.If you are using the Windows XP copy feature you will get an exact copy of the ISO.This burner only copies files as they are,an ISO for an ISO,an EXE for an EXE etc.You need a true burning sofware to translate the ISO to files like they were on the original CD.Good luck.

Ok well since i use xp i didnt have a burner, so i downloaded a trial version of Cheetah Burner (available at www.download.com) and so if i open the .iso with that program and then burn the .iso to a disc will it work? (how do i make sure cheetah translates the file?)
Thanks...

With an .iso file (IIRC, Knoppix is around 700mb), you need to burn the .iso as an image for the pc to boot from it. If you extract the .iso and copy all the folders to a CD, it will not be able to boot unless you copy the directories to your HDD and make a boot floppy from the boot image.
Get a free download of Nero and in the menu, there is an option to "burn as image" if my memory serves me (been a LONG time since I used windoze).

Oh, BTW, here's a link to get knoppix installed on your HDD:
http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html

how do i extract it?(i want to extract it right?)
"If you extract the .iso and copy all the folders to a CD, it will not be able to boot unless you copy the directories to your HDD and make a boot floppy from the boot image."
OK so can i downlaod it again, but instead jsut downlaod it to the cd? will that be simplest? (lol basically i dont understand the what u said where I just quoted you.)
sorry and thanks so much for ur patience!

Do not copy the ISO file to a CD! Run Cheetah Burner and select:
Start -> Burn ISO fileWhen Cheetah is done and you examine it with Windows Explorer the CD's contents you will see the original CDs contents recreated with all the directories and files visible.

The Knoppix download is an image file. You will need to use burning software with the "burn as image" option. Nero is what I use to burn the Knoppix cd. You can download a demo at Nero.com.
