Comment:

I am looking to buy a new notebook. I have gone to a couple of stores but it seem the sales people don't even know what there selling. I want something with a 64 bit processor since I don't plan on buying another notebook for a few years. I have seen a couple of Athlon 64 but they where to bulky. I want something thin and small. I saw a couple of Intels but I am not sure how to tell if there 64 bit. I believe it has something to do with the processor number. So my question is how can I tell when a pentium processor in a notebook is a 64 bit.

Thank you in advance for you help.

I'm a big AMD fan and have used their CPUs for years.

But, for a notebook, I'd go with a Centrino right now. I think you will get the physical package that you are looking for and will be getting the best mobile technology available.

Pentium 64 processors are the 600 series. I have yet to see any mention of a 6xxM processor.

If there was a Intel 64 bit notebook, probably the clearest indication would be the huge banner proclaiming 64bit! Possibly the five digit price tag might be another clue.

I think you're way too early in the market for a 64-Bit notebook. The reason is that M$ has just RTM the 64-bit OS and trained the System Builders. It will take time for the system builders to market the new PCs. What you should look for is a sticker affixed to the PC, attesting that this is a 64bit PC.

With respect to my post above, I should have written ..

It will take time for the system builders to develop and market the new PCs.

Another thing to keep in mind when you buy the machine is that, at present time, there is no software applications made specifically for the 64 bit, not even Anti-virus.
