How do I install an old scanner?

March 2, 2005 at 10:36:35
Specs: Windows XP Service Pack 2, 2.40/760

I recently bought a new computer, and after a long time using Windows ME I'm getting used to Windows XP. My only big problem is that I have no idea how to install my old Paperport 6000 scanner here, if that's even possible. I still have the CD the scanner came with, but it's no good.

But first, go to the manufactures website and get the drivers for XP

You will probably have to get a driver for the scanner that will enable it to work with Win XP. Do a Google search for your scanner, and look for a site that has the XP driver available for download. Once you get the driver on your computer, you should be able to install the unit as new hardware.

I tried finding a link to the drivers for you... click here.

However, they don't seem to have XP drivers....Then again, how'd you get ME drivers?

The good thing about XP, is that it comes with support for so many devices...you just plug them in, and they start working. So first try adding the new hardware through the control panel to see if XP can do it...otherwise, you'll probably have to try installing the other versions to see if they'll work (maybe the NT version, since XP has parts derived from it).

Or if you're desperate enough, maybe you can try to install software that's meant for a more current scanner lol (my tv card isn't even listed anymore...I download the drivers for a different tv card from the same manufacturer, and it works)

An older post on the Visioneer site said

Quote:
----------------
Visioneer will not be posting a certified XP driver for the 6000 series scanners.

The Visioneer 6000 series scanners are not supported on Windows XP, although it may function properly on most systems. If you choose to install the software on Windows XP, we recommend creating a system checkpoint by using the Windows XP System Restore feature.

I found the following driver in the Visioneer website:

PaperPort 6000 Driver
Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows NT ServicePack 3 Required

However, when I'm about to install it, I get the following messages:

WARNING: This update does not apply to Windows NT.

WARNING: It is recommended that you DO NOT install this update unless you have specifically advised to do so by Visioneer Technical Support. Continuing could make your PaperPort software unusable.

Should I create a restore point and give it a try?

If you really need ato use that scanner then go for it. Just be aware of the worst possible outcome and have your files backed up. You are more fortunate than us folks with the older Logitech PageScan Scanners. We don't have even an unsupported driver to try. I dual boot Win98 and Win2000 primarily because of that scanner, which I love. If there were different versions of the software available you may want to try them all if necessary. Good Luck

Like OtheHill says, that's why I dual boot 98se and XP Pro...I don't want to give up my old PaperPort 3100b.

If Visioneer says they don't or won't update drivers for 2000 or XP, you can believe it.

Afternoon All,
Visioneer at one time posted how to install older scanners on their website. Then they took the pages off!! Fortunately I printed the pages on how to install my 6100 USB scanner before they took the pages off.
The only problem is that after I installed the scanner, I had to upgrade to Paperport 8 to be able to use it. Earlier versions of Paperport WILL NOT WORK ON XP!!!. They force you to buy new software!!!!
You will probably be better off to buy a new scanner that has software for XP.
If you have Paperport 6.1, I have the instructions on how to install the scanner on XP. BUT you will have to get new scanning
software to be able to use it on XP.
Have a good one,
XDon

I just successfully installed and ran a Visioneer 6000 with PaperPort 5.2 (OEM) software under XP sp2.

The install warns about compatibility, but I "OKed" past that. The default folders are C:\PAPRPORT and C:\PAPRPORT\DATA, I substituted ...Program Files\PAPRPORT and ...My Documents\PAPRPORT (the PaperPort Install does not "see" My Documents, you need to find the actual path to the folder.

I was able to do a basic B&W scan and view the document. Have not checked beyond that.
