You must use XP recovery disk since there is no DOS under NT kernel systems like Windows XP. DOS can't access or format NTFS or FAT32 partitions that are required by XP to install.

Is the boot order configured correctly in the BIOS? The CD/DVD drive must be listed before the HDD. Once you have the straightened out, just boot off the XP disk, "press any key" when you see the prompt, then follow the instructions. However, if you have a SATA HDD, it won't be recognized until you either load the SATA drivers from a floppy disk, or change the SATA controller setting in the BIOS to IDE mode, or use an XP installation disk that has the SATA drives slipstreamed into it.
