I have an old 33.6k modem, but I have no clue what manufacturer that makes it. Only thing I do know is that it has a Rockwell chipset ... I would like to know what company made this modem, I haven't found a program that can tell me what it is. I would like to find out so I can see if the manufacturer has a bios flash to upgrade it from 33.6 to 56k.

Thanks

33.6k to 56k is a long way to try for an upgrade. Try tracking the fcc id number and the numbers on the chips.

You will not find an upgrade from 33.6K to 56K.

In fact, I doubt very much if that modem has a ROM. Let alone a rewriteable ROM to upgrade.

Post back what's written on the rockwell chip. There's probably an R number on it, R6686-26 for example. You can usually find drivers using a google search for that number.

If it's a USR modem there should be a white sticker on the phone jack connections containing a product code. Googling that should give drivers.

Many 33.6 USR modems had upgrades to 56 K but I don't know if they're still available.

It can be done providing the modem "is" flashable, and you "can" find the correct flash. I just flashed a 33.6 US Robotics modem to a 56, no problem, works like a champ after flash. What I did was to google search for a flash for my exact modem. But I repeat, it has to be the right flash or the modem will be "trash". Good luck.

Being able to upgrade the 33.6's was one of their selling points. I've still got a 33.6 Hayes accura that says on the box 'upgradeable to 56K via software download'. I think in most cases the upgrades didn't exist when they sold the modem so that's probably why they didn't do the upgrades themselves and then sell them. And even when they were available you usually had to pay for the update.

Sorry it took so long to write back.... ok this is what i know and relay to you.

on the rockwell chip it is marked:RCV336ACF/SP
R6749-21

now there is a quite a few modems that use this chipset.... such as Conexant and USR,etc.

I went to the Conexant website and downloaded a tool to detect my modem and it found no modem.

So I'm not sure what this tells me.... so I also went to my modem settings and checked the modem strings.... maybe this will help.

Rockwell V.34 Voice,Speakerphone PNP
Indentifier: UNIMODEMFB5B1FA1
ATI3 - V2.050-V34_ACF_DP1
ATI6 - RCV336DPFSP Rev 44BC

Hopefully this is helpful information as to who the manufacturer of this modem is.

there is another chip I found that says: Atech ATS 220. Now I believe this is the manufacturer, but now can't seem to find the driver... found one for ATS 200 and ATS 256.... haven't found ATS 220 yet.

Sorry I keep writting here, but I come to find out that Atech doesn't make modems, the chip I see is for power to the modem. But I wanted to post this link because on that page you will see exactly what I get if I do a diagnosis of My modem.

If you were just looking for drivers they would probaby be easy to find using the R6749-21 as a search term. But a possible upgrade to 56K would be harder to find especially without knowing the specific manufacturer.

Wizard-Fred mentioned above about using the FCC ID number. That might work to find the manufacturer. But sometimes hardware is manufactured by one place and packaged and sold by another.

Assuming the drivers are installed for it, if you go to 'modems' in control panel and run the diagnostics on it, you may get some info pointing to the manufacturer.

But most likely you won't be able to find any upgrades for it.

I just use AOL. I had their IM and buddy list activated for awhile but spam kept getting through so I disabled all that.
