The only problem is that some cables may be keyed by plugging a pin (20?) and or an index on the plug. Get a new cable. Some older drives and motherboards have all the pins which might make it difficult to find a cable.

Not unless you have an adapter or SATA ports on the motherboard or add a SATA card.

SATA PCI cards:
Running an adapter off an IDE port would defeat the purpose since it would be limited to the speed of an IDE drive, at least a PCI/SATA card would give you SATA I speed.
IDE drives:

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
