how do I add a com port

Specs: Windows XP
I have added a gps reciever to my computer but it needs a com port numbered 2,3,4,or 5. My computer only has a com port 1. I went to the add hardware in the control panel and added a com port but it will only add a port number 10 and says it has a problem and will not work. How do I add another com port?

You don't just add another com port, software wise.

Is this a serial 9 pin connector, or a USB connector?

PowerMac 9600(1 ghz G4)
512mb RAM
50gb SCSI
ATi 9200 PCI

Yeah, do you physically connect a cable to your com port or is the GPS device a card you physically install?

If you connect directly then go into your cmos/bios setup and see if you can rename the com port as com2. If so you may need to disable 'PnP OS' (if that's an option) to keep windows from changing it back to com1. Your other option for a direct connection is to buy a PCI com port card.

If it's a card then the installation software should create a virtual com port somewhat like a modem does. In that case you shouldn't have to do anything but install the drivers and software.

Now that's what I call a sticky situation
