How Change Internet connections

My laptop presently connects to the internet from a cable modem through a wireless router. How can I occasionally change to internet access directly from the modem/cable (so that I can download from the internet faster), then back again to wireless router? There is an ethernet port available on my laptop. Thank you, A Novice IRA
