The drive letter assigned to a device you plug into a USB port is not necessarily the same every time you plug it in - it can vary depending on what drive letters were available when it was plugged in, and what other USB devices that are assigned drive letters (devices data can be stored on) were or were not plugged in when you plugged in the device. If the drive letter used in the shortcut's properties for where the file is on the mp3 player is not correct, the shortcut to the file on the mp3 player will not work.

If the shortcut is to a file on the mp3 player, and if it doesn't work when the mp3 player is plugged in, if you're sure the drive letter is correct in the shortcut's properties, the same drive letter as the mp3 player is presently using, if you're sure the file should be on the mp3 player, you may need to plug the mp3 player into a different USB port, or the data on the mp3 player may be damaged.

I'm not sure if it's the same situation but check # 7 here:

and # 15 if the syntax is confusing.
