How can I make my CPU faster?

Specs: Windows XP, 512
I have a toshiba laptop pentium 4 with 55.8 GB Hard Drive (15.5 used/40.3 free), 512 RAM w/1.5 GB Virtual Memory. At times it is really slow and tends to freeze. My kids like to go on my space and my facebook as well as gamer websites. Originally I thought it was the photos saved by my daughter in the harddrive, but these were removed. I have to clean the computer in safe mode, complete a full scan, disk sweep, and defrag, a least once or twice per week and it take hours to complete the process. Any suggestions?

Download and run Ccleaner Slim from the link below. Use it regularly. You can't increase the speed of your laptop but you can keep it from bogging down.

If your kids can crap up your laptop in only one week then perhaps you should restrict where they go.

Most likely the big problem is cookies and temp files. Ccleaner will remove those and more. Only takes seconds to run.

BTW, your virtual memory is not the same as real memory (RAM). It is reserved space on the hard drive that is used if you don't have enough physical RAM to complete a task. Another name for it is a swap file. If you have less than 1GB of installed RAM then you may want to increase the amount. Download and use SIW to determine how much RAM is installed as well as about everything else you want to know about your computer. Get SIW at the link below.

Might be time to do a clean install from OEM disks.

Might be that you have spyware and other malware that slows the system down. That along with normal MS installers that leave stuff in the registry and normal bad programs you get slow systems.
