I was wondering on how do you find your current xp password. I typed my password for my xp account but forgot it. Ive heard you can go into safe mode but i want to know if there is a way using a keylogger or software to find out what you made your password as. The i could go into the user tab in the control pannel and change it. Is there some program or keyreccorder?

To be more specific, I have heard of a registry were xp stores the letters of the xp user or users passwords. How do you read a registry and which one is it?

This is a question that should be asked in Windows XP Forum. Users passwords are deeply encrypted in the SAM folder. No keylogger or software can reveal it or else the whole concept of Windows XP security will be a joke on M$.

Jam's link should help but the same link also stated the followings:

Note: If you are looking for password cracking tools that can be used for miscellaneous objectives such as password-protected PDF documents, zipped archives, Office documents, BIOS protection and so on then this pages is NOT for you. See some links at the bottom of this page for hints on where to find such tools, but I can tell you right away that Google might be a better choice for you.

I was actually looking for an easy way to "crack" the admin passowrd for a friend. His daughter's currently in Iraq & she's the sys admin. Apparently he aksed her for it the last time they talked, but she doesn't remember...probably has other things on her mind. Finding & decrypting it certainly doesn't seem like an easy task though.

Isn't there usually a "hint" question?

Not that I am aware of or have I ever been prompted to use the Hint feature. M$ password saving schemes are at best too anarchic.

How about doing a 'repair' reinstall? I seem to remember someone suggesting that it would allow you to change the password. Does anyone know if that will work?

I've not tried that only because none of my clients had a need for it. How about browsing Daniel Petri's (the same guy who wrote the link provided by jam) own forum below. Who knows there's a trick for everybody...

Question has been asked and answered hundreds of times on this site alone. Obiously a search wasn't done beforehand.

Wondering how many times this week alone this question has been asked.....

The only method that worked for me in the past was that Austrumi utility, it's a little convoluted as you deploy it but it got the mission accomplished for me.

The easiest way to do it is booting a live Linux CD, thereby having a operating system at your disposal running from your CD-Rom. Access to all system resources are available. From there, delete or move the SAM file. Return to using Windows and the password blockade will be gone.

The path to the SAM file is: C:/Windows/System32/Config/SAM
