Specs: Windows 7
There are 4 usb ports on top of my Acer. Sonmetimes a flash drive is identified by one letter; other times the same drive is identified by a different letter. If I have multiple drives in the ports, how do I know which one is which?

Ports may have identification for the purpose of knowing which port is served by which USB controller but letter assignment is based strictly on availability.

If you want the device to use the same letter all the time then try assigning a higher letter that is unlikely to ever be used otherwise. Something in the back of the alphabet, like S,T,U, etc. This is a good idea anyway because sometimes Windows gets confused by similar type devices in the same category.

✔ Best Answer
USB ports do not have letters, they have numbers.

Letter are allocated to removable storage plugged into an USB port by Windows each and every time it recognises a new device plugged in. Which letter it gets is dependant on what other devices are plugged in at any given time.

You identify it by giving each device a name which then retained when it is unplugged.

Right Click > Properties and fill in the Space with a name of up to 11 characters.
