Kind of hard to see on the shot. It's to the left and right of the window starting from the top of the window to the bottom.it kinda duplicates the windows really faded though. i'll see if i can get another better screenshot.

Trinitron monitor?

If so, these are normal. They are guide wires that help keep the display in place.

I believe 15" get 1 wire, 17" gets 2 and 19"+ gets 3.

This may be why no one else but you can see these lines.

No it's not a trinitron. It's a samsung 19". There are not permanantly in 1 place. they are like faded extensions to windows. if i close all programs and look at the desktop it is fine. my monitor never did this before. this just happened yesterday.thanks

Erm...I'm a bit confused here. Did you capture the image with printscreen? If so, then that isn't (please correct me if I'm wrong) actually capturing exactly what your monitor is displaying. For example if you brought up the monitors setup box and hit printscreen, would it capture that as well? Thought not........
Ghosting is usually down to a bad video cable. Have you checked this, or can you borrow another to try? You need to eliminate each item, one at a time. If you have reinstalled windows and it is still there, then it is more likely hardware related. Did this start after you changed video drivers? Some Nvidia driver releases can cause this. Funnily enough I had a problem with newer drivers which vanished when I changed to older ones. Crazy, but there you go.......
I would also say that if the screengrab does not show the problem, then it could be monitor lead or monitor related.

it happened before installing new drivers. It does look like ghostly lines. I dunno how to replace the cable becuase it's stuck to the monitor. it's something that would come out on printscreen. it's like bright ghostly faded lines.

I've had a look at the picture, but unfortunately I can't really see anything out of the ordinary. If you are sure that this problem occurs on a screen dump, then I would imagine that it could be occurring before the signal leaves the graphics card and is therefore a graphics card problem.
It looks like your VGA cable may be integrated into your monitor at one end? Do you have a friend who can bring up a monitor + cable for you to try? If it works OK, then I guess that would eliminate the display from the problem.
Although you said it occurred before you installed new drivers, have you tried booting into Windows safe mode to see if the problem is still there?

i found out that a lot of people with TNT2 M64's have this problem. Searched google for "lines on monitor tnt2". They describe the exact problem perfectly."Horizontal dark lines across my entire screen if anywhere in that area of pixels there is somethign dark, such as a line of text on a white background"
"the transparentish gray shadows that appear on text, menus etc"
"adow lines extending to both sides of the screen for everyline of text or menu I put up there"

Well i'm not the only one. But we still don't have a solution.

I know what you mean now. That card is known to have these issues but reverting to older drivers has helped some people.
If this was my machine, I would replace the graphics card to be honest BUT I would also try to use an older driver set first. If you go down this route, you will generally have to change your driver to standard VGA first and uninstall the old drivers. After that you would update the card's drivers to the ones you downloaded and unzipped to a directory. This is not the usual route to take as you usually go upwards with graphics drivers not down. It could also cause problems with games as well. Still if you want to try it, I will include a link to an older set of TNT drivers. I would probably try a mid year 2000 set and see what happens.
If the above makes little sense to you, you'll have to stick with it really, or buy a newer card. If you decide to go for an older driver set, then it is RISKY, but it may get rid of the distortion. It's at your own discretion. Please don't do it if you're not 100% sure of what you are doing.

Use at your own risk!

Sorry, just noticed your O/S as XP. The procedure above would be for 98,98SE. I guess you could use an old Win2K driver, but I probably wouldn't go there. Nvidia have a driver archive for XP/2000 going back to April this year that you could try with XP. It may work but I'd really be looking at buying another card.

that's doesn't work. I think it's a hardware problem. I see those lines even when XP setup was in progress. I tried the older drivers to no avail.

Well to me it looks like a new card. I do know what you mean now about the ghosting. I have a Geforce GTS and on the old 5. series drivers from about 2000, the display was fine. When I updated to the newer Detonator drivers, I had two vertical ghost 'smears' on the left side of the monitor and the text became fuzzier. The smearing is only noticeable on dark scenes but the older drivers did not have it. This is with Win98se. I use the latest Detonator drivers with XP and these are superb.
I'd still check your VGA cable is secure/OK though as this is the main cause of non card related ghosting.

i did. I have a fairly new monitor. the cable ends look fine. This problem has been happening mainly to people with TNT2's though so i think i might just get a new card. Just got to collect some money. heh.

Sounds good. Before I go from this thread, I would add that it could be something else that's causing this. It could be a power problem or interference from elsewhere. Using a good quality shielded VGA cable can help. I'd try to borrow a cheap graphics card first with lead, before finding that the problem is still occurring having spent lots of money on a new card! Perhaps you could try a local computer shop and (assuming he's reasonably cheap), ask to borrow a spare card, but promise to come back to him for the new one if he let's you do that. Obviously you may have to leave a small fee!!

Richard, I know how you feel, I have the very same problem, although I have a ASUS GFORCE V6600 deluxe V Card. One day things are great the next "the lines". I ended up getting a new display - no joy of course. I tried eveything ie. re-install system "with old drives, removed and installed card as well ensured that no newly added electrical components were around the computer. Yes like you I checked all cords. I belive the only thing could the card going. I just hope its not the motherboard. Right now I have to live with the lines, however if you do "for sure find out the problem please drop me a line. Thanks Rich. John"o"
