Hi, here's a question from a complete novice:
I have a E4026 desktop ( I can hear you all sighing from here!) When I boot it up horizontal lines appear on the monitor, these last for approx 60 secs and then dissappear. This also happens when I start to use the computer again from 'Stand by' mode. It's not the monitor, I've used the monitor on a different PC and it's fine. However, I've read on various sites that I may need to replace the Video card?? Is this your opinion too? If so, where do I buy a replacement and how do I replace it? Thank you so much for your help.

I can't seem to find any specs on that model. That said, I suspect you don't have a dedicated graphics expansion slot.

If I am correct then you would need to install a PCI slot type graphics card. Low end PCI graphics cards are not terribly expensive. That said, eMachines are notorious for their terrible power supplies.

Do you have any documentation for that computer?

I am not being very helpful and I apologize for that.

In what country do you live?

Thanks Othehill
I'm in the UK. I believe I have some documentation, what in particular do I need to look for?
Thank you Sarah

I don't even know what type of graphics are integrated into the motherboard. The choices would be either AGP or PCIx.

After knowing that I could post a link showing both types of slots so you could open the case and have a look.

The reason why I suspect you have no slot is that I did find a link where someone has installed a PCI graphics card in that model. Logic would dictate you would use the best technology available.

So you documentation should describe what type of graphics and if you are really lucky a manual may actually show the motherboard to explain how to add cards.

Hope you understand the above.

Hi there
I just found this info about the E4026, http://www.gennersales.co.uk/recove... Do you think this may be the cause of the horizontal lines?
If so, would it be easy to replace or should I call out someone who knows what they are doing?
Thanks sarah x

It isn't the cause of the lines but it confirms what I suspected. You can only install an inferior PCI card. If you don't game then it would be OK. I suggest that you live with it until it gets much worse. Waiting 60 seconds isn't the end of the world.

If you want to install a PCI card then post a new thread in the hardware forum asking for suggestions on a low end PCI video card. And a good place to buy it in the UK.

The card 'might' have a flaky connection in the slot. It might be worth a shot to re-seat the card.
