Hello.
I have many reasons to believe that I may have fried my 3400 processor in my current computer. (Very sad I know) I am considering buying a new processor now. I would like to know what is the 'highest end' processor on the 754 socket tpye that is compitable with my K8V-X mobo?
I have already looked and found the 3700 is that the highest? I realize that a 939 socket type would be the best buy but I am unsure if I want a to buy a new mobo also...
Thanks for your input.

If ASUS says that a 3700 is the fastest socket 745 Athlon64 this MOBO supports, what is your question?

Refer to post 38664 for lots and lots of detials on the same issue.
I learned recently one of my RAM sticks is a Kingston PC2700 and Nanya PC3200 running at 166mhz.
Memory timings are at 2.5-3-3-7. If you need more information I have it. So this may also be causing the issue. I am not sure though?
The 3700 is the fatest chip for the 754 socket- that was my question.
Thanks for all your help once again.

As I suspected...there's nothing wrong with your CPU. If it was fried, it wouldn't boot up at all. A CPU works or it doesn't...there's no in between. And upgrading from a 3400+ to a 3700+ would be a waste of money. You were told that in your other thread. Are you sure you reinstalled the HSF correctly & didn't apply too much paste? You should have used a dab about the size of a BB & spread it out thinly & evenly. Here's the best instructions you'll find:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions_big2.htm

Are you trying to run your PC2700 RAM at 200MHz? or are they both running at 166MHz? Download memtest86...use the file to create a bootable floppy, boot off it, & let it run for at least one complete series of tests. If there are any errors, replace the RAM. Run the test with one stick at a time.

http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

BTW, upgrade your video card...the 9250 is weak & not a good card for gaming.

Both RAM sticks run at 166Mhz. Okay I never ran the memtest86 one stick at a time but I will.
Yes I believe I put the right amount of thermal paste on.
My graphics card was free- I know it sucks but I want a stable system first.
Thanks once again.

Ran memtest86 for 5 passes each with one stick of RAM and no errors showed up. I also ran it with both and no errors again. I think the RAM works the timings are just messed up? Does that make sense?

"I think the RAM works the timings are just messed up?"

I suppose it's possible. Download CPUZ v1.30, unzip & click on CPUZ.exe, then click on the SPD tab....see what's listed on the timing table. But even if your PC3200 has default timings of 3-4-4-8 @ 200MHz, it should be OK at 2.5-3-3-7 @ 166MHz. Did you set the timings manually or did you just go with the BIOS defaults?

Yes I set then all on default.
Slot 1
512mb
PC2700 (166mhz)
CAS# Latency- 2.5
RAS# to CAS#- 3
RAS# Precharge-3
TRas#-7

Slot 2
512mb
PC3200 (200mhz)
CAS# Latency- 2.5
RAS# to CAS#- 3
RAS# Precharge-3
TRas#-7

Now they should be fine because the timings match up- or does that mean nothing? Why is RAM so confusing?

Hi

from the manual, it seems you have to populate memory slots 2& 3 for ddr333 configuration not the blue slot1. Any double side stick in slot 2, try it, im not sure why but my k8vse gave similar stability issues till i just went the whole ddr400 route, (from manual; table1 chap2-12) this is a finiky mobo for memory anyway solid perfomer when ok :).

just for info my timings on ddr400
3200 @2000Mhz
htt200 fsb200, 3,3,3,8 (medium setting)
at 166 2.5,3,3,7
at 133 2,2,2,6
bios 1005 trc ,trfc etc set to auto

regards

Hi

the asus qvl states any memory of the following brand hynix, infinion, kingston pc3200 (ddr400)
with the part no: KVR400X64C3A/*
where* is ram capacity 512, 1 gig etc

samsung part no;M368L6423ETM/512

you dont need dual channel ram as its a 754 cpu.
http://www.valueram.com/config/ModelsInfoTest2.asp?SysID=20681&mfr=ASUS&model=K8V&OEM=ASU&submit1=Search

also check on crucial.com handy look up by manufacturer & motherboard.

basically using optimum ram type will ensure pc works at its best, note for 2 sticks of ddr400 use slots 1&2 or 1,3(re above, my error should be chapter 1-11.)

regards

Okay thank you. For your help. I may buy the RAM from newegg (just because I like newegg and have always used them- your websites were fine) but right now my system is fairly stable if I keep the CPU loads down.
