we have a user who's computer will sporadically give off what she calls "high pitched squealing". by the time i get there, it's not doing it anymore. it may go on for a couple of minutes, a few times a day. i'm familiar with the sounds of bad, dying cpu and case fans - and i wouldn't describe them as high pitched.
First thing I'd suspect (since the PC apparently works OK) is a fan bearing, but it could be a CD or Hard drive bearing. You'd have to open the case and listen to pinpoint whatever it is.
my bet is the RAM. RAM "crying" is a rare phenomena where it screams on boot up, usually when the RAM is on its way to the big hardware store in the sky :) try replacing your customer's RAM, and seeing if that makes a difference
