Hello,
I think there is some problem with my CPU. Before my cpu temperature is aroun 30c with normal use and 40-45c under heavy load. But now somehow it keeps getting worse and worse. It will go as high as 60-65c under heavy load and 41c under normal use. I bought thermal compound and applied to the cpu but it didn't work, the temp is still the same. So what could be the problem? I cleaned out all the dust and everything. All fans are working properly. Here is my cpu stats:
P4 2.4b 533
fan speed around 2500rpm (is this right? , my friend's is around 3500rpm)sometimes i can even smell the heat coming out from the case... I really want this fixed because i know it will reduce the cpu's lifespan
thanks
Brad

I said all fans are working properly
including the PSU. i have 3 fans cpu, videocard and PSU
any other suggestions?

Well, you may want to check intels website and see exactly what temp it is supossed to be running at. You may have already passed the damage threshold. I think the simpliest answer is to start troubleshooting the fans. Since the processor is what is getting overheated & you noticed a different fan spped this is the fan you should start with. If it is only spinning @ 2500 rpm it may be on its way to failure. Replace the processor fan and see if performance doesn't get better. If the problem is corrected or improves slightly my next suggestion would be to get an upgraded heatsink for the processor. My AMD processor ran a little too hot for comfort with the stock heatsink and fan but and fan and heatsink upgrade dropped the temp 12 degrees F.
Recap1. Swap out processor fan with new one.
2. Change heatsink out with higher performance heatsink.Let us know how it's working for you/

Check the numbers (temp, speeds) in the BIOS and make sure they jive with the readings you are getting from the software.
The BIOS numbers should be correct. It is possible the software numbers are off and it is really getting hotter, or the fans are slower, than it shows.

His BIOS may not support that. If it does, by all means check it to ensure that you are indeed smelling the burning chips. Start troubleshooting the fans.

ok thanks,
so should i buy a new heatsink and fan? since i don't have an extra one. Which should i buy? go for the cheapest? since its just testing...
thanks

I wouldn't go for the cheapest, you do get what you pay for. Go to coolerguys.com and look under p4. There are alot of great fan heatsink combo's for under $20. I don't know what inside your case looks like or how your mobo's situated, just make sure you have enough clearance for these combo's. My processor sits underneath my power supply so i was limited in height.
The pcToys QuietMaxx 5700+ looks good
The Spire CPU Cooler SP420B8 has a large Copper heatsink
And the Cooler Master Jet 4 just looks plain cool! There are lots of fans here that will work for you. And these guys are super quick at answering any questions you have about fit or performance, or at least they were for me. Check it out and let us know how you are doing!

Try a local computer guys first. What could cost $20 from Website X and take a week to get may only cost $25 from your local builder and have today.

Note that Jimi_1 is a real advocate for the local guy. This is fine and dandy for testing, but the local guy usually doesn't have quite the selection that most of these online cooling vendors have. CompUsa carries some of the PCtoys cooling stuff and it is usually 8-10% more expensive. So its a trade-off, price vs. time.

I have another question/point for you to consider as well.
You do not mention any case exhaust fan or mobo /case temp reading???
What happens to your temps when you run with the case open for a while? The psu fan does not usually pull air out of the case either.

case temp is around 30to 40 depending on the load. when case is open its around 27
so its not much differencealso does a new heatsink really decrease temp? by how much? could i be that the CPU just some how gets heated up soooo fast on such a high temp that even the heatsink won't help

Only if it is of a superior design to the one it replaces.
Too many variable factors to give a definite range of improvement. If you properly clean the cpu mating surface, and properly apply good quality "artic silver, etc", and carefully mate cpu to heatsink, and have a good quality hsfan, and have adequate case ventilation (Your Temps sound OK but wish you mentioned a case exhaust fan?), then NO the cpu should not spike to some temp that cannot be regulated properly.
Your temps sound a bit high perhaps but you would need to check the cpu mfr site for that die to know what is it's max safe operating range.
Also the warning you mention in the boot process, could be a problem in the warning settings(?)If it doesn't shutdown the cpu and all has been operating well then it is not a critical issue, but you can definitely seek improvements/ improved hardware, etc.

ok i'll give everything i notice this time, see if you can get anything from it:
before:
normal load:30-35c
games/heavyload: 40-45c
fan speed: around 2500rpmafter
normal load:41-45c
games/heavyload:54-63
fan speed: sameeven if i go check the site for same cpu temp range still there is a 10c increase for no reason from before to after.
Also by exhuast fan you mean the one on the PSU? its working properly
I did apply arctic silver 5 exactly on the instruction and cleaned both CPU and heatsink mating surface
One other thing to add, I notice when I am in Cmos it lags when I chose selections. And I did update BIOS to the latest version.
Some people told me that it might be a bad sensor, but you can really feel the heat on the heatsink. My games starts to lag after around 10-15mins of gameplay and temp can go as high as 60c.
I think the heatsink and the Cpu as enough contact from the thermal compound. Because once applied the cpu and the heatsink stick together very hard, it requires some strength to pull it off. Do you think if I just change a fan it would help?
I got no new heatsink yet
thanks

My last post here...

No generally the psu fan draws air through part of the psu block itself but does not exhaust much air from within the case.Below the psu unit, are there holes in a square pattern to mount a case exhaust fan?
Don't get me wrong here, your reported case temps are not bad.....I just like to see a direct case exhaust fan with any temp problems, but it may not make that much difference "in your case".
Try the improved cpu fan for starters, later you can try a copper hs unit if you like.

Understand...no case exhaust fan.
But the case does have vent holes on back panel for one to be mounted (if you chose to at some point) correct?
No reply needed.....Good Luck
