CPU/Ram: Intel Core 2 Q6600 - 2GB
Comment:

Evening folks, i recently downloaded a few programs to generally check my computers various temperatures. I noticed a few are considerably high. I'm using a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (Kentsfield), apparently the cores are idling around:

Core #0 84C
Core #1 82C
Core #2 81C
Core #3 81C

Surely this is not normal? The rest of the temperatures seem "okay" apart from my graphics card which idles at 57C. I'm using an 8800GT. I've posted two pictures below from the exact readings, i really don't have any idea on the cooling that is currently in the tower.

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

I see you only have one fan running which I assume is the CPU fan. Have you no case fans? A fan at the back extracting hot air can make a dramatic difference.

Is this a home built computer a an OEM? An incorrectly fitted heat sink or badly applied heat-sink grease can play havoc with temperatures.

I really have no idea about any other fans fitted, i haven't opened up the tower since purchase. It was built to my specification at a near by shop, i think the only thing i didn't look into with enough detail was cooling.

If you haven't opened the case it may need cleaning. Use canned compressed air to blow out the insides. Don't forget all fans and both ends of the power supply.

This will be nasty so I suggest you do it outside of in a garage if possible.

Temperature monitoring programs sometimes need to be setup. To verify those temps are accurate view them, shut down and immediately boot into the BIOS and look at PC Health to see if the numbers are close.

Cheers mate I'll have a gander at that tomorrow. Just a quick question, is it dangerously high? I mean I've been playing very demanding games for months and had no problems what so ever until Brothers In Arms shut down the entire computer and i was prompted to check the various temperatures.

Everest is claiming my CPU is running at 13C, with only one cooling fan listed, I'll have to invest i think.

Hi
I guess the others Temps reported by speedfan are cpu case temps and are low temperatures, betwen 13 and 27 ºC,
so I don´t think is a case cooling issue,
speedfun may not report other fans if theey are not attached to the mobo directly..

but 84Cº is too much and the differenc case/core st to high!!! so it should one of two options..
1- software is not reporting what you think, so do what OtheHill says.

2- CPU cooler is not working, may be too dirty, or may be misplaced over the CPU. CHeck That.

good luck

Check the temp reading in the BIOS. If it confirms 80C+ at idle, the CPU HSF was most likely installed improperly.

Hey folks just a quick update. I gave my computer the biggest clean it's ever seen in it's short life, what a difference! It is now quiet as hell, hard to notice it's actually running. Most importantly, the temperatures have dropped dramatically. All cores are now stabilizing at 48-50C, which is a difference from 80C.
The BIOS states the CPU is idling at 35C, which is a come down from 70C. I'll continue to monitor them and see how things go. Thank you for all the help.
