I hooked up my hi fi to my computer so that i have better sound, and i had the speakers next to the monitor, when i moved them away, the sides of the screen were distorded and a feint green colour, i switched off the monitor and back on and it was ok, is it dangerous to have speakers so close they do that, could it cause a permanent colour distortation.

can anyone recommend any good speakers? i only have an onboard sound card but i got great sound thorugh my hifi

I have a set of Altec Lansing 621 speakers/w powered subwoofer that sound great. Around $110.

The color distortion only occurs when the magnetic field of the speakers disrupts the electron beam movement inside the CRT. This can happen either by phsically moving the speakers or by simple turning up the volume on a large set of woofers to the point where the speaker cone (with attached electro-magnet) is vibrating back and forth with considerable movement. If you keep the speakers stationary and the volume low, you should not notice any discoloration in the monitor. Also, almost every computer monitor built after 1990 or so has a built-in degausser which, as you mentioned, fixes the problem by simply turning the monitor off and back on again or sometimes there is a seperate deguass button located on the monitor for doing this manually. I guess permanent damage could be possible, but I think the speakers whould have to putting out some extremely strong magnetic waves.
