Help with slave drive

Specs: Windows XP
Ok this is my problem. I just got a 160 wd and I can not get it to install anything on it. This is what I do. Try to install a program and I want to put it on the slave drive. So I manually browse to the slave. But it keeps switching back to the master drive. But it installs also on the slave. The program on the slave takes up no hard drive space but it takes up space on the master but doesn't show up in programs. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is it a PATA or SATA drive? Did you format it?

After fiddling around a bit I was able to install a game on it. But for some reason anything I start up from the CD it just keeps going to the C drive no matter how much I browse to E (160) After browseing to the E drive I clicked ok and it installs on the C but it also installs on E its kinda like its shadowing it. I only have a 20 gig as my C and I do alot of stuff on my pc so I need the other drive. Hopefully this is a little clearer.
