Chances are, you have enough power, unless you have many hard drives and/or other drives etc. that need power. A normal system w/400w is plenty in my opinion.

I was also having problems running direct3d when in dxdiag, but this was after I installed DX9, which, according to Microsofts Website, is normal... My problems don't involve lock ups in DxDiag though, so I am not sure about that.

Did you make sure to totally uninstall your old display drivers before installing the new card/drivers?

This could be the problem if you haven't.

In fact, this seems to be the only thing I can think of at the moment. Surely, if you didn't correctly uninstall your old display drivers, this could cause the problems you are having.

Maybe someone else who is more knowledgeable will share some more specific information that will help you better.

Good luck, Red.

you reinstalled windows!!!

you didn't need to do that.

If you go into your control panel> add/remove programs> and then click on the NVidia software listing, click remove.

It will prompt you to restart, most likely, but don't.

on your desktop, right click on "my computer" (or however you get into it in Win XP) then select properties>then devices ( or device manager). make sure you have no listing under DISPLAY ADAPTERS (or display). if you do, highlight it and click remove.

shut down your system, physically remove the NVidia card, and install the radeon.

put everything back together and start your system.

follow the directions for installing the ati "catalyst" software (or radeon 9700pro software that came with your card)

You also should have to update your agp controller driver. detailed instructions for doing this are in the beginning of the manual...if you have an ATI card manual.

If this is too much for you, i highly recommend taking it to someone, if you can afford it.

You can also go to the manufacturer's website they may have some info and help on installing it... if not I am almost positive that ATI's site does.

good luck, red.

I forgot something.

After you install the radeon, and turn on your system, click yes to letting windows find the best driver for the card it detects. It will install VGA drivers I think. After that, THEN follow the radeon instructions for installing the software...

I had the same problems on a KT400. Make sure that you turn fastwrites off in the SmartGart portion of the ATI control panel and only go up to 4x! That'll cause massive problems. Also, if that doesn't help it completely (it made it better but didn't completely fix the problem in my case), turn down some AGP settings in the BIOS that affect AGP latency and speed. Turning everything down made my system completely stable, but I didn't get a chance to find out exactly which setting made the difference. Hope this helps.
