Don't know if Laptops that old had harddrive passwords. If so, you ain't gettin in.
Why would you want the computer even for free? I recommend you pass. After all, a laptop is meant for portablility and you aren't going to be able to do much with it on the road.

I agree with Othehill, pass on it. Purchasing a hard drive for that 'old' guy might prove very difficult and expensive, and a battery might be even tougher.

there may be a tiny hole on the bottom of the laptop where you can insert a paperclip and reset the whole laptop. That should clear the passwords. I've had that before on certain laptops....but it is your choice
