Hi,
I bought a second hand Canon BJC-4000 printer, but never got around to using it.
When I tried to print recently, the
words did not print clearly--they have
horizontal bands without ink. I cleaned
the printer head with rubbing alcohol and changed the cartridge, this did not help.
Can anyone advice?Thanks.

Hi Madhulika.
Did you replace the cartridge or the ink tanks? The cartridge is the box that holds the ink tanks.
The cartridge has the print heads and will eventually burn out.
My Canon 6000 cartridge had to be replaced in about 1-1/2 years.
If the cartridge is new then there may be dried ink from a long period of non-use.
Run the maintenance wizard cleaning function several times.
I don't know where it is in XP but find your Printer icon in Control Panel.
Right click on the printer icon and choose Properties.
Choose Maintenance.
Click on - Deep Cleaning
Followed by - Nozzle check (the nozzle check will show you which color is having trouble printing)
Do this combination several times.
Also after you get the ink to print, choose Print Head Alignment to make sure the printer heads are in the proper positions.
Take care,Linda

Hi again.
You can download a manual if you didn't get one.

The Canon site doesn't have an XP driver for your printer and if the built in XP device driver doesn't work properly you could try the Windows 2000 drivers since XP and Windows 2000 are closely related. Here is a website that has Windows 2000 drivers.
You have to download 2 files printer files 1 and printer files 2.
