here is my problem, i have 2 hard drives. 1 is set to primary master, the other set to primary slave. the primary master broken into 2 partitions. 1 is C: and the other is E:. the primary slave hd is called D:. I tried to remove the primary slave hd from cmos then i removed the ribbon cable and power. When i reboot everything is ok untill i click on MY COMPUTER or click on folders. when i re-attach the hd that i removed everything is fine again. i have a cdrom and a cdrw that is set to secondary master(cd rom) and secondary slave(cd rw). Do i have to change the cd rom to primary slave and the cdrw to secondary master if i remove the HD? please tell me how to fix this.

Check the jumper on your remaining drive. You may have had it set to "Master with Slave"
If there is no slave present the system will not boot. Change the jumper on the remaining drive to Cable Select or Master/single setting.

Another question springs to mind. You had C drive and E drive as partitions on one HDD and your D was the slave. Did you by any chance have any PROGRAMS installed in either D or E drives? If so removing the D drive will stuff up the registry pointers for any such programs. As a general rule of thumb, All programs should be installed in the operating system drive (Usually C). Other drives should be used for file/data storage or standalone programs that do not require "Installing".

Try the CD drive as the primary slave & the CDRW as the secondary master

i have all my programs on the C: drive. nothing is on D: and E:. I tried to make it so that the partitions for the master drive were C: and D: but by unpartitioning the slave drive and E:, then repartioning the second part of the master HD first and then repartition the slave drive but it still gives me that same drive letters. anyone knwo how to change this? And aslo there is no jumpers on my slave hard drive. My master hard drive is set to master.

"Try the CD drive as the primary slave & the CDRW as the secondary master"
I tried that and my computer couldn't find the primary hard drive for some reason and didnt even boot up.

"Check the jumper on your remaining drive. You may have had it set to "Master with Slave"
What do you mean master with slave? On my HD there is only a Master, Slave, Cable Select, and a blank option.

"If there is no slave present the system will not boot. Change the jumper on the remaining drive to Cable Select or Master/single setting."
If i put the master HD on cable select what should i set the CDrom and CDRW to?

i was just wondering, does the drive letters really matter? is it possible to have a C: and a E: drive as partitions or do you have to have them in order like C: and D:.

And also what is cable select? Is it the setting so that the computer decides which is master and which is slave for you? If so, whats the point in haveing master and slave, why not set everything on cable select.

I finally got the problem fixed. When I first tried to set my HD as primary master, cdrom as primary slave, cdrw and secondary master, it didnt work for some reason. Like Jam suggested I decided to try it again and this time it worked. I probably had something connected wrong the first time. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
