CPU/Ram: Pentium 3/128 RAM
Comment:

I have a HP Pavilion Desktop (9680C), Win 98 SE, 650 Pentium 3, 128 MB RAM.

It came with a CD-rom and a DVD-rom. I just bought a NEC DVD+/-RW ND-3520A. I'm very much a NOVICE but thought I could install the NEC Drive. Following instructions from the HP site, I took the DVD-rom out and replaced it with the new NEC Drive.

The original CD-rom was and still is the master and the NEC is the slave.

M: is the CD-rom
D: is the new NEC
E: is still present and I assume that was my old DVD-rom

In my Device Mgr:
NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A
AXV CD/DVD-ROM
TEAC CD-W54E

If I double click the NEC drive in the Device Mgr, the device status says it's working properly, but it also says:
Device Type: CDROM
Manufacturer: (standard CD-ROM device)
Hardware version: not available

Obviously I screwed this up. Could someone help me out, and remember, I'm a novice.

Thanks

Uninstall it in device manager and reboot. XP should reinstall it.

Do you mean Win 98 should reinstall it? I don't have XP.

Should I also uninstall drive E: that is still showing up?

Thanks

Dump the CD-ROM drive. Connect the DVD-ROM to the same IDE cable as the HDD & make it the slave. Connect the DVD burner to the 2ndary cable as the master.

Reboot & get into your BIOS...make sure the optical drives are properly identified. Then reboot & go into safe mode. Get into the device manager & remove ALL entries for ALL the optical drives, then reboot again. Windows will reinstall the optical drives & you should be good to go

As I said, I'm a novice so I want to be sure I understand before I open my tower again and start trying to move stuff around.

You say connect the DVD-ROM to the same IDE cable as the Hard Drive and make it the slave and connect the DVD burner to the secondary cable as the master... I'm not following this.

I previously followed the instructions from the Hp site here:

OK, I looked at the HP site.

The 1st section about removing drivers is basically what I explained, except I recommend to do it from "safe mode". The reason for this is that sometimes things get installed 2 or 3 times, but this duplication doesn't show up in standard Windows mode. By doing it in safe mode, you can remove ALL entries & when you reboot the system, Windows will just install the ones you need & there'll be less chance of having any driver conflicts. In case you don't know, tapping the F8 key during bootup will get you into "safe mode". The display will look different, but that's normal, it will change back again when you reboot.

There's no point in keeping the CD-ROM drive is you have a DVD-ROM. The DVD-ROM can handle both duties, plus it'll save wear & tear on your DVD burner if you use the DVD-ROM to view DVDs.

HP recommends using the CS (cable select) jumper. I do not recommend EVER doing that...supposedly it's easier, but in my experience, it just makes things more difficult. Use the Master or Slave jumper setting instead. This means that you may have to check the setting on the hard drive...if it's currently on CS (cable select), change it to Master.

If your case has several drive bays (3 for example), place the DVD-ROM in the lowest bay & make sure the jumper is set to Slave. Using the same IDE ribbon cable for the hard drive, connect the end plug to the DVD & the middle to the hard drive. (you can do this because you're NOT using CS)

Install the DVD Burner in the top bay. It's usually a good idea to leave a bay open between the 2 drives if possible...it allows for better air circulation. Set the jumper on the burner to Master connect one end of the IDE cable to the 2ndary IDE channel on the board, & the other end to the the DVD burner. don't use the middle connector (probably won't reach anyway...lol).

Hopefully that makes sense. If not, ask again.
