Get hold of a DOS disk 1 or a disk with the Command.com on it. Insert disk into floppy drive, reboot to floppy drive and at the A: prompt type sys c:(then press the enter key).
When it says sys files copied, remove disk and reboot.

hi if the comp you are now useing is win98 go to control panal, add/remove programs, and open tab for startup disk to make a boot disk with cd support. try the new boot floppy and if you get the same error you will have to go into bios and change the boot order. have it boot a: first

yes, if you have a windows xp cd, it's a bootable cd. but for the windows 98, it's only just a cd, so you'll need a bootdisk. or you could make a bootable cd, that will basically work the same way as a bootdisk. i suggest you use the original windows 98 bootdisk because it contains the files needed to use the CD-ROM.

If it's Win98 Se, the CD is bootable. However, Win98 is not

I had a problem just like this one, all above answers are valid but my problem was that the cmos settings had been erased by accident and the autodetect setting was lost for the harddrive.
