I'm looking for information on getting the onboard Audio to work on my system. I'm running WinXP Home on an Asus P4S8X-X. I plug in speakers and nothing. Go to Control Panel>Sounds and get "No Audio Detected" and everything is grayed out. I update to the latest BIOS rev.
However, I found Audio driver updates for this board on Asus' website but don't know to install them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas,
Bryan

Have you enabled Sound in BIOS, XP should detect a sound card/chip if even though it may not supply the drivers...

Yes, I forgot to mention that...audio was enabled in bios....I believe I could choose between [AUTO] and [DISABLED]....I set it to Auto.

Is windows detecting the sound device to install?
I have the p4s8x and the sound does occasionally disappear. I remove the sound card from the windows device manager and restart. Windows detects the card and I have to select the location to install the drivers from. It then installs fine.
I have tried to install the drivers using the "new hardware wizard" and also the "update driver" in the device manager, but for some reason, these never work.

Try this, it usually works for me when I have troublesome hardware.
First unzip/install the audio drivers into a directory.
Then check your Device Manager for any unknown devices. To get to the device manager, right click on My Computer and select Properties. When the window pops up select the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
Look for any devices that have a question mark or exclamation mark on their little icons. If you see any right click on them and select uninstall. Make sure all are gone then restart.
After you logon, or mabey before, the system should auto-detect the audio device and will ask for a driver. Select the "I want to select the hardware from a list" option, hit next, then click on the "Have Disk" button. Browse to the directory where you unzipped the driver files. One, or mabey more, files should be displayed with the .inf extension. If there is more than one, than select the one that looks the best, it might say "audio" or "winxp" in the filename. Select it and click ok. If all is good than one option should come up in a window. Select it, click next and it should install.
If this all went as it should than the audio device should be installed and working. You might have to restart a couple of times in order for everything to finish installing. You might also need to be logged in as an administrator to install the drivers for the sound card. Good luck.
