Ive just upgraded from a Athlon Xp 2000(266fsb) to a new XP 2400 (note i dont say athlon or duron-cause im not sure now!).
When the pc loads it says AMD Unkown Duron 2400+, my cmos setup says its a duron, windows device manager also says this and a program called cpu-id. system information says the cpu is running at 2390mhz But after doing an aquamark3 test, revealing my system is now 5000points slower than before UPgrading!! help! why would my pc think this is a duron (they dont make them that fast do they?)

What motherboard do you have? I see you wrote ECS as the manufacturer. This isn't one of those integrated boards, is it? There is no such thing as a Duron 2400+, but ECS/PCChips marketed their integrated CPUs under names such as Pro 2400+ or Pro 2400A+. This was discussed not long ago:

http://www.computing.net/cpus/wwwboard/forum/10686.html

I have no idea what you have...an Athlon XP 2400+ doesn't run at 2390mhz, it runs at 2000mhz (15 x 133mhz) & the 2400+ Sempron runs at 1667mhz (10 x 166mhz)

Try using CPUZ v1.24...check what core you have & what the multiplier & FSB settings are...post back with your results:

ok, this is weird, sometimes the pc boots up recognising the cpu as an Athlon 1800, but most of the time boots up as a Duron 2400. Ive tried cpu-id, cpuz, ive also tried amds offerings-all say the same-a Duron 2400. I havent tried doing the bios yet, but my board (ecs elitegroup K7S5A Pro 266fsb) is less than 2 years old, and even the manual tells me i can go up to a 2600XP cpu, so it must have been designed to run a 2400surely?
The only problem i can see, is in the cmos setup. I cant change the duron to an athlon (the only settings it will let me change are the cpu frequency and the dram frequency) which with my XP2000 were 133mhz/133mhz. Cmos automatically changes these to 100/100 with the 2400xp cpu, i can change it to what it should be on (133,133) but then the pc wont boot at all(just accesses all the drives continously) it will only boot when the frequencys are 100-cpu/100-dram or 100-cpu/133-dram

Dude, you didn't provide the info I asked for...

Run CPUZ...under Processor, what does it say for name & Code name? Under Clocks, what does it say for Core Speed, Multiplier & FSB? Under Cache, what does it say for L2?

Better yet, click on the "About" tab, then click HTML report...it should be saved to My Documents. Copy/paste the report so we can have a look

Download & install the latest ECS BIOS, or either the Cheepoman or HoneyX overclocking BIOS

There is a 1.8 Duron but I don't think there is a PR rating on the chip.

AMD Duron 1.8GHz Socket A Processor - OEM

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ "Thoroughbred" 266 FSB, 256K Cache Processor - Retail

Model# AXDA2400BOX
Item # N82E16819103336
Specifications:
Model: AMD Athlon XP 2400+

As you can see the 2400XP 266FSB chip runs at 2GHz @133 so that can't be what is in your machine. You report 2390MHz. At 100FSB. Maybe someone else can make something of this. Did you by chance purchase a mobile 2400XP 266FSB. These chips are unlocked and maybe that is the problem.

As you can see the name is Athlon, but the specification name is Duron!, just retested aquamark, and ive lost 5000 points since taking the 2000XP cpu out and puting this 2400XP cpu in. I was going to update my bios, but the manual says the boards compatible with anything up to a 2600.
Do you think the cpus faulty? or the mobo? or just incompatability?

It says your CPU is a Barton, which is NOT officially supported by your motherboard...that would explain the weird readings.

I suggest you take the CPU off & examine the model number. There is no 2400+ desktop Barton, so if that number (2400+) is correct, you have a mobile CPU.

You say my mobo doesnt support a barton, would a bios update fix this or not? i bought this chip on ebay: heres the details:

AMD XP2400+ 'THORNTON' 266MHz FSB, 256K, L2 CACHE, SOCKET A PROCESSOR
Thornton core are in fact Barton core processors but set to run at 266Mhz as opposed to 333MHz and with half the L2 cache removed (256KB as opposed to 512KB)

This makes the new thornton processors the most overclockable on the market, as they can be run at 333MHz as they are a Barton core. Also the extra 256KB of L2 cache can be re-enabled by the enthusiast. There are many overclockers running their 2000+ Thorntons as high as 2.2GHz. So these 2400+ will go beyond that.

NOTE: Any overclocking invalidates warranty.

All i know, ive bought a 2400 AMD (NOT INTEL), Athlon (NOT DURON), XP (Not MP!), 266FSB (NOT 333FSB), pretty simple to me.

So please enlighten me, what a thornton is?

You knew that you had a Thorton all along but you waited til the 10 response to say so! That's a waste of my time & everyone else that tried to help...

As for your question, "what the hell is a thornton??", you already answered that yourself...

"Thornton core are in fact Barton core processors but set to run at 266Mhz as opposed to 333MHz and with half the L2 cache removed (256KB as opposed to 512KB)"

Your motherboard does NOT support the Thorton, regardless of the fact it's a 266FSB CPU. It will not run properly & will not be properly identified because the BIOS doesn't contain any info about Thorton core XPs. Either get a CPU that's supported by your board...or get a board that supports a Thorton CPU...or struggle with what you have & continually ask why

Hey after 10 posts, i wasnt even sure i had an Athlon let alone anything else. If it was so important for you to know, why didnt you ask? Even the cpuz report says clearly its a barton! (whatever the hell that is)
