So I have an Intel Celeron 766 MHz Socket 370 CPU with FCPGA, I was just wondering how I can upgrade my CPU. I need a socket 370 CPU, right? But does it have to be FCPGA, or can I use a FCPGA2? The highest Celeron 370 FCPGA CPU I can find is 1.1 GHz. Would an upgrade from 766 mhz (66fsb) to a 1.1GHz(100fsb) be worth the 40 some bucks it is. I'm totally newbie with CPU's. I would like to buy a new computer, but I have no $$$. Please correct me if I'm wrong with something. (I just learned this FCPGA stuff today)

Most Motherboards that support celeron 370fcpga will support pentium IIIs 370 fcpga (Though the motherboard would probably require a bios update). I would definately upgrade to a pentium III with a fbs of 100 or 133 mhz.

However, an upgrade to 1.1 ghz celeron with 100 fsb would be a definate improvement!! And, in the long run, coupled with more ram or a faster hard drive, would be the most noticeable upgrade you could make to your system!

This update creates a BIOS Flash Utility Floppy for version: 3.07 09-17-2001

Installation:
-------------
1. Ensure you copy these files to a boot floppy.
-For Win-ME systems, this requires the use of a system start-up floppy.
Since Win-ME systems use FAT32, you may elect to copy these BIOS files to
a directory on the hard drive; C:\HP\BIOSupdt for example.
-For Win-XP, you need to format a floppy as a boot floppy.
Since a Win-XP boot floppy cannot access an NTFS-formatted hard drive, you need to
expanded these BIOS files to A:\
2. Once you boot from the floppy, position to where your expanded the BIOS files.
-For Win-ME this may be C:\HP\BIOSupdt
-For Win-XP they'll be on your floppy so no change of directory should be necessary.
3. Begin the BIOS update process by entering the command: BIOSupdt

4. When rebooting after the update, the following message may be displayed:

0251: System CMOS checksum bad - Default configuration used
Press <F1> to Setup, <F2> to Resume

5. Press F1 to enter SETUP
6. Press F5 to reset BIOS defaults.
7. Press F10 to exit SETUP saving your changes.
8. Press ENTER to confirm the save.

So, I've updated my BIOS once before, but I don't know how it all works. Is all BIOS updates erased after a HD format or what?

The BIOS is stored on your motherboard, not your harddrive, therefore formatting your HD won't affect the BIOS at all.

Did you get a satisfactory answer? Lots of info, but is it what you need? I would have thought, you could put a P3 in that motherboard. I donm't see why couldn't yet? Unless somewhere in the ifo posted, it specifically says you can't.

Are P3's exactly like the Celeron's? Are the socket 370's aligned the same? Another question is what is the difference between the FCPGA, and FCPGA2?
