buy this older board abit kx7 i have the same one
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=22&manufactory=1283&DEPA=0&sortby=14&order=1
its factory flashed for a 2000 xp cpu , now buy the 200 xp cpu retail includes fan and heatsink it will run you about $89.00 on pricewatch.com so both will be about $180.00, the same price as your 180.00 p4 you wanted to buy. now with that savings buy a gefroce 4 ti 4200..note you have to get a stick of ddr ram your sdram wont work with this board sell your old ram on ebay and get a stick of ddrram.

If you're going to upgrade the video card, save yourself some money, and get a better graphics card by getting a radeon 9000 pro 128mb. Faster and cheaper than any of the geforce cards.

NOT! While the 9000 Pro may take down some of the "labotomized" GF4 MX series cards, it can't even come close to beating even the "low end" Ti. In fact, In a lot of cases, it can't even beat out the older Radeon 8500!!!

Go with a GeForce4 Ti4200. You won't reget it!

Let's see...I agree with David about getting the Athlon XP 2100+...that'll save you quite a bit & you won't regret it. But you'll have to decide on a different motherboard...there are several that will support SDRAM or DDR RAM...or you can take the money you save from "downgrading" from the P4 to an XP & buy some DDR ram. Plus $148 is a lot to pay for a mobo...there are some damn good socket A boards out there for well under $100!

UTLLAMA is correct about the video card too. The 9000 Pro is not a good choice...& DON'T get a GF4 MX card!! The 4200Ti is your best bet, & as he said, the ATI 8500 is better than the 9000...don't be fooled by the numbers.

Here's something else to consider...for about the price of a new power supply, you could get an entire new case w/PSU & keep your old system for a backup.

Also, there are plenty of DVD-ROM & CDRW drives available for a LOT cheaper than the prices you listed. Shop around....

Radeon 9000pro is a good card. It is excellent.

But the Ti's are supers---hot.

But the Radeon is the current king.

I don't get it though. You say you want a cheap pc, but you are still not getting an Athlon? Totally makes no sense whatsoever.

You're considering:

P4 1.8Ghz - $180
Intel Desktop Board D845WN - $148
CPU Cooler - $12

TOTAL: $340

For a couple bucks more you can get:

EPOX EP-8RDA+ BUNDLE W/ COOLING FAN
AMD ATHLON XP 2100+
512MB KINGSTON DDR

TOTAL: $345.55

The Epox board features the nForce2 chipset, ATA133, 8x AGP, 6 PCI, DDR, LAN, Firewire and audio. Looks like one hell of a board, and that, combined with an XP2100+ and 512 MB of DDR should absolutely kick the butt of that 1.8GHz combo and 256 MB of PC100 you posted.

The 128 MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro is an absolutely wonderful card, and from what I've read IS THE CURRENT KING OF THE HILL, but at a retail price of ~ $300, costs a hell of a lot more than a Ti4200. In a "budget" machine, the Ti4200 is the way to go!

Hello!

Don't try buying a best when you can only afford a pet.

Take your budget and go looking for clearance sales on superceded IBM, Dell, Compaq, HP etc. Try the 'net.

These BIG guys have already accepted the 'write down' on them because they were the last 100 or so from yesterday's stock and you won't get better for the same money.

They also come complete with Op Sys, Warranty, Help Desk Support and everything you can't buy when building one at home on a limited budget. Oh and most have a manufacturer's 'restore disk' that will get you back up and running within half an hour if any disaster strikes.

Worth considering all these benefits.

It's amazing how much your dollar night stretch.
