Dooes anyone have an "all-purpose" guide to installing video cards? I am installing an ATI 8500 64 mb with TV-out. I am concerend about the order of operations. I am under the impression:

1) download updated drivers from ATI

2) uninstall old video drivers

3) replace card with new one

4) install the drivers AND the updated drivers to the new card.

Did I miss anything? Any advice is appreciated

allright check it man.
1. install new vid card.
2. turn pc on. it should say 'Found New Hardware'. Cancel out of all of that.
3. Download latest drivers from www.ati.com ( there was a new update maybe a week ago.
4. save the new drivers. run the install. it should wanna reboot after all of this, so do that.
i've never un-installed any graphics drivers for new ones that are released. and i've never had any conflicts. the disc that came with the card should only be used if you don't have net access to get your display settings correct. the only reason you'd need to un-install or delete is if your going from nVidia to ATI or vice versa. old ATI to new ATI won't make a lick o' difference, the new driver updates will take care of it all.

Person,

You nailed it on the head. I am changing from nVidia to ATI...so perhaps uninstall them first, huh?

removing nvidia drivers normally doesn't fully remove them. Here's how.

Think this will work if I have the GeForce 2 MX200, as well?

With ATI cards it is essential that you uninstall the old drivers before you install the new drivers for an existing ATI card, or if you change to a different ATI card. Anyway, why clutter up your system with old drivers that are no longer needed?

I have an ATI RADEON 32 M.B. PCI .ATI support , sent me a set of instructions for updating the driver and it says you must uninstall the old drivers B/4 installing the new one. ATI seems to have a problem with its own software and drivers working together. I also have the ATI TV WONDER USB Edition. Both these products come with a Multi Media Center, however they are differant versions and ATI says having both installed will cause version conflicts. I uninstalled the RADEONS MMC and now I have no DVD player ! ATI told me I could install the DVD player only off the RADEON CD and guess what ,it locked out the TV in , so I had to uninstall the DVD player. If I did'nt listen to ATI, I would still have DVD capabilities. I had both Multi Media Centers installed and there was no conflicts. I forgot the old "if it anit broke dont fix it " way of thinking , and now Iam paying for listening to ATI support. I should have known better then to listen to a company that cant even get its own products to work well together ! Good Luck ,Nick

well, this is kinda the reason i go with nVidia over ATI. however, my roomate bought a 7000 card on his first build. about 2 weeks ago, he got the 9700 Pro. we installed right over it. the new driver install will install fresh, or over the current ones. so, your discretion is needed. if you want to, remove them. or if not, it still won't effect performance, my roomie's FPS is usually around 130 so in that aspect, there's no conflict. i have a Tv Tuner card in my setup, and webcam, but in order to view webcam, i have to disable the video feed. if not, whatever cable channel is currently on, is what people see or is displayed when i run it. kinda bizarre, but getting a bunch of gadgets to all function in harmony can be some work.
