What type of system is it--laptop or desktop? I have had this problem occur on an older desktop drive that had a dirty laser. Over time, dust can build up on the lens of the laser, reducing its power and focus. CDs might still work since they require less precision, but DVDs require a finer, more power laser in order to read properly. If you can get to the laser lens (easier on laptop-style trays than on desktop drives), trying using a jet of canned air to blow off the dust. If this doesn't work, you can sometimes find optical drive cleaning discs at electronics stores.
