Help! Cd-rom is perturbing me!

This problem started about a week ago and I've ignored it until now but I'm starting to have Sim withdrawal symptoms. Problem is my Cd-Rom appears to have gone slightly crap. If I put a CD-rom in it goes "pfff" for a while, and the green light flashes underneath it and nothing happens. I can move the cursor on the screen but everything is unresponsive and the computer has been known to crash completely if one's clicking around becomes too frantic. Last time I tried I managed to get My Computer open, where it said that I had an AUDIO Cd inserted. But I didn't, it was a CD-rom! and when I opened the CD player programme, it said there was no disk inserted at all. Even worse when I DO actually try playing audio cds, because it says that the drive is not accessible and there's nothing in there. Not that clued up about computer technicalities so all I know is that my Cd-rom drive says 32x on it. This is the first time this has happened - any advice as to what I should do? Thankyou!

It's time for a new CD-ROM. You can get a new 52x for about $35 to $50.

That doesn't sound too bad, but is that really the only option? Ok, and *idiot alert*, this may be a stupid question, but my cd-rom is in the tower next to my computer, would that one be removed and a new one put in, or would i have to get an external thingy?

That tower is your computer, unless you've got some new fangled thing I haven't seen yet.
