Toshiba / Nb100

Specs: Windows XP
I have windows XP on a Toshiba netbook. The system was acting strange freezing etc so I ran a scan with AVG which found around 19 viruses/spyware (I'm not sure which). The scan didnt finish as the system switched itself off (im assuming this had something to do with the viruses as it was fully charged). Now when I turn it on it loads as normal but when I type my password to log on it logs me straight back out again. I have a recovery Cd and I purchased a external cd drive to use with the laptop so i could run it. It doesnt work!!! I go to the boot menu and have tried all the options there (HDD, FDD CD/DVD, Usb) none of them work. It simply takes me to the log in screen!! Some one help me please. It was a brand new laptop I'v had it for just over a month.
I have tried that now rearanging the options making hdd last. Now Iv pressed f12 at the start up going to the boot manager and when i press enter for the cd drive it load for a few seconds and then goes on to state: media test failure .. check cables......exiting exe cd .

I have checked the cables and everything is in order. It is a new external cd drive and iv tested it on my pc so I know it is working. I was wondering if perhaps because it has never been used on the laptop before it would not work because i can not log in for the drivers to be installed.
Would that be a factor???
Any ideas??

No drivers needed normally to boot.

Be sure your cd is good also.

Try making another boot cd like a live linux cd. Puppy or dsl and see if it boots to the cd's

If fails then you can suspect the netbook.

It is strange, still sounds like you are not really booting to the cd.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
