Specs: Windows XP
Hello -

I just 'sanitized' my laptop to start fresh - hoped to reinstall XP and use primarily as a backup machine. However, I cannot get it to boot up. I just get a blinking cursor on the top of the screen.

Any suggestions? Should I just donate this to Goodwill???

What do you mean by "sanitized?" Did you boot to the XP CD in order to reinstall?

hold on...have you reinstalled Windows XP ?

If not, I think, by *an accident*, you have deleted some Windows Core File...

...however it was, you can perform a repair installation if you don`t want to format...and this is NOT "A General Hardware Problem"...

Could also be a boot sector problem.
FIXMBR could help on this.

I tried to run the Windows XP setup disk - but it stopped after partial install and reported a problem with the hard drive.

Would I need another disk to perform a repair installation?

Thanks all, for the help thus far!

Then download a harddrive diagnostic tool from the drive manufacturer, burn it to a bootable CD and boot up with it.
Test the drive and if it won't pass a manufacturers fitness test you have your answer.

What was going wrong before you attempted the reinstall?
Are you using a HP restore disc?

At what point in the installation process does it hang and exactly what error message do you get?

What did you use to "sanitize" the hard disk?

Sanitize is usually a procedure followed to delete everything of a hard disk prior to disposal. Some sanitizing applications will even remove information put there by the manufacture thus rendering the disk unusable.
